You too can be a sustainable farmer
Published on 14 Dec 2016Want to see a super fun way to re-use old sacks? Then check out this thought provoking talk by environmentalist Pepe. Discover how we can collectively reduce our environmental impact, eat delicious organic food grown on our doorsteps in the city, and re-establish our lost connection with that which nourishes us; the land.
https://www.facebook.com/tishangembewu/
Joseph Millman, known as Pepe to most, is a well-travelled environmentalist. He is the spokesperson for Tishange Mbewu (Let’s plant seeds), an organic urban agriculture project developed in Bauleni, Lusaka, a high-density, low-income compound. The organization trains unemployed women to grow organic food in sack gardens, with the aim of improving nutrition and food security, while also encouraging these poor urban populations to remain connected with the land. Tishange Mbewu is the result of Pepe’s desire to live as sustainably as possible and inspire people to do the same. Pepe applies the knowledge he gained in South and North America, Europe, Asia and Australia to the activities in Bauleni, while also looking beyond: his future ambition is to further explore the idea of sustainability through the medium of eco-villages.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Illawarra Folk Festival: Dancing with Spirit of Serpentine
Thank you to all my lovely friends and family who supported us dancing at the Illawarra Folk Festival. I had an absolutely amazing weekend (apart from Saturday night when I came home so tired from festivaling that my toasted sandwiches caught on fire! - very exciting!). I made some new friends and got reacquainted with some from previous years. Spirit of Serpentine performed a Tribal style dance demonstration followed by a workshop run by Jasmine and a good time was had by all! See you at the next festival!
Classes by Spirit of Serpentine are run in Woonona and will resume Feb 7th.

What is CSG Mining? There are different types of CSG mining. They all involve extracting water from coal seams to de-pressurise them and release gas. They all result in untreatable ‘produced water’, and lower the fresh water table. The most well known — and unpopular — method is hydraulic fracturing (or fracking), the specific practice featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary Gasland. It involves blasting a mixture of water, sand and toxic chemicals deep into the ground to crack the bedrock and release coal seam gas. Toxic chemicals have already been found in fracked wells in Queensland, and wells closed down due to water contamination. If Illawarra wells prove commercially viable, fracking may be used to extract gas.
A range of groups nationally and worldwide are calling for a moratorium on, and a public inquiry into the health, safety and environmental impacts, of CSG. It's not over yet!

What are the concerns? We are worried because CSG mining:
- Always involves contaminated water as extraction of gas draws water out of the coal seam that is highly saline and can contain toxic and radioactive compounds, endocrine disruptors and heavy metals;
- When using hydraulic fracturing (or fracking), contaminates large quantities of fresh water with sand and chemicals that are pumped underground;
- Lowers the fresh water table;
- Is a fire hazard, as wells, processing plants and pipelines leak;
- Risks a range of direct and indirect health impacts such heart, lung, kidney and neurological problems and cancer;
- Has a global warming impact that is as bad if not worse than coal, over a twenty year period
